Courtney Lesoon is a second-year PhD student in the Aga Khan Program for Islamic Architecture, in the History, Theory & Criticism section of the Department of Architecture at MIT. She earned her BA from College of the Holy Cross (History of Art) and her MA from the University of Michigan (Modern Middle Eastern & North African Studies). Courtney was a 2012-2013 U.S. Student Fulbright Grantee to the United Arab Emirates where her research concerned contemporary art production in the UAE. Before arriving at MIT, Courtney worked as a Research Assistant in the Art of the Middle East Department at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Her dissertation research at MIT concerns urbanism and centers of learning in the medieval Levant and North Africa. Other research interests include contemporary mosque architecture outside of the traditionally Islamic world, Damascene interiors, and the medieval Mediterranean more generally.
